About Mashzo
Mashzo is three brewing calculators and the guides that explain the readings behind them, run by Ellul Solutions Ltd. Everything on the site is arithmetic over figures a brewer types in, using constants that are named and linked on the page where they are used.
Why this site exists
This site exists because the number most brewers use is a shortcut. Multiply the gravity you lost by 131.25 and you get an answer that is close, and HMRC's own guide says the factor is not constant: it runs from 0.125 on a very weak beer to 0.135 on a very strong one. Nobody was publishing a calculator that used the statutory table, so we did, and then did the same thing for priming sugar, where almost every calculator hides an unattributed curve where a NIST constant would do.
Who it is for
For the person who brews at home and takes a gravity reading before and after, and for the very small brewer doing the same sums on bigger vessels.
Not for someone shopping for kit, malt or hops, not for anyone distilling, and not for a reader who only wants to know what to drink.
What it does not do
- It does not sell, stock or rank kit, malt, hops or yeast, and there are no affiliate links on it.
- It says nothing about distilling. Making spirits at home is a different craft and unlawful here without a licence.
- It publishes no laboratory measurement. Where duty or a label depends on a strength, HMRC's guide sets out the method that counts.
